Constructed in the mid-19th century, Forbidden Drive is a gravel trail that follows Wissahickon Creek and serves as the main route through the park. Although the name may sound somewhat ominous, Forbidden Drive, which previously operated as a turnpike, is so named because cars have been prohibited from the trail since the 1920s.
Today, Forbidden Drive attracts hikers, cyclists, and equestrians, and features beautiful scenery as well as historical landmarks along the trail, which extends five miles from Northwestern Avenue to Lincoln Drive. In addition to Forbidden Drive, Wissahickon Park offers an additional 50 miles of hiking trails that cut through dense forests, open meadows, and other scenic terrains.
